CALORIE LABELLING IN THE OUT OF HOME SECTOR – GUIDANCE

The new regulations come into force from 6th April 2022

The government has introduced legislation to implement mandatory calorie labelling among large food businesses (businesses with 250 or more employees) in the out of home sector.

The DHSC guidance on calorie labelling can be found here. It applies unless there is a specific exemption.  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/calorie-labelling-in-the-out-of-home-sector/calorie-labelling-in-the-out-of-home-sector-implementation-guidance#food-in-scope

Exemptions are listed in clause 4 of the Regs and include:

“Food provided at an institution providing education to pupils below the age of 18”

Other specific exemptions include food, which is on the menu temporarily, that is for less than 30 consecutive days and a total of 30 days in any year.

Dukefield Foodservice Recommendation:

If your school / college does have 250 or more employees AND 6th form pupils, it is possible that you will need to declare calorific content of the food served – but only if the 6th form pupils are in their own outlet with a separate offer.

If 6th form pupils eat at the main high school facilities with the rest of the students, it may be possible that declaring calorie content will not be necessary because the 6th form pupils are eating off menus already checked under the school food standards.

We would advise that if you are unsure whether these new rules apply to your lunch provision, you should contact your local environmental health team for their guidance and advice.

If it is deemed necessary under the new calorie declaration legislation to declare the caloric content of your food offer, this can be completed using our HANDs software, or if using the Planglow labelling system, the information can be obtained through Erudus. https://www.dukefieldfood.com/nutritional-software-hands
