UK Food Information Amendment (Natasha's Law) - October 2021

Natasha’s Law will come into effect from October this year.

Sadly, the introduction of the new legislation has come about after the death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse following an allergic reaction to a pre-packaged sandwich that contained an undisclosed ingredient – sesame seeds. The tragic incident has incited new regulations that should help prevent this happening in the future, food businesses from October onwards will be required to list all ingredients in pre-packed foods. Anything sold directly onsite will need full disclosure of ingredients and allergens on the label.

Also known as the UK Food Information Amendment, the new stricter laws will help protect those vulnerable and provide reassurance when purchasing a pre-packed meal. Only supermarkets are required to do this at present. However following the introduction of the law in October all business in England, Wales and Northern Ireland this also includes school catering will have to show the following information on all packaging:

  • Name of food

  • Full ingredients including allergens, they must also be prominently displayed so the warning is clear (this can be achieved by highlighting the ingredients in bold)

We will be supporting our customers to ensure they have everything they need in order to comply with the new legislation. We will be providing regular updates between now and October on ways we can help.
